I see a lot of people today being rather negative of not only last nights episode but also of this season. Let me make perfectly clear to you: If you want end of the world madness and the onset of a zombie apocalypse, go and watch Night of the Living Dead. This is not what TWD is about now and it never was.
The Walking Dead was described by Robert Kirkman (the creator of the comic series) as what happens to the survivors of a zombie movie after the credits start rolling. It’s about their survival, not a romanticized Resident Evil 2 story (not that I don’t like that or anything).
No, the TV series does not follow the comic word for word. We figured that one out when Carl didn’t shoot Shane in the throat or when they went to the CDC in the first season. That’s okay though because the writing for that season did a good job at portraying Rick and the survivors. This season, yes the writing staff has changed but the characters are the same as last season (save for Shane, he’s actually even crazier) but the fresh writers results in fresh stories. Look at Heroes, season 1 was awesome, season 2 was great, season 3 was okay… see the pattern there? This keeps it from being repetitive and makes a show last longer.
In summary, this is still a great show if you look at it for what it is. It isn’t a story of people surviving zombies, it’s a story of people trying to survive each other [with zombies].
